The following scale is for people who are in the process of grieving. It is designed to help you gauge how you are progressing with this process. One of the keys to coping with a loss of someone/something important is self-understanding.  This Grief Scale has been developed to describe and measure the feelings and thoughts that are common in the grieving process. It is also to help "normalize" different reactions.

If you have not had a particular experience that is mentioned on the scale, don't worry - grieving is different for everyone.  Becoming aware of yourself helps you feel like you have more control over yourself.  This will enable you the be feel more hopeful about where you have been and where you are going.

To understand your ups and downs, we have ranked experiences from 1 to 10

(l is the lowest and 10 the most intense).  Ranking yourself on the scale will give you a "picture" of your grief at this moment in time.  Periodically you should re-visit this page and re-rank yourself to create a chart of your recovery progress.
