Take charge of your day
Like all people in your position, you probably find that you
have specific goals, plans and schedules for your day. By
half an hour into your day, however, you may find any number
of unexpected things crowding in on you from a variety of
different directions…and before you know it, your schedule
flies ‘out the window’, your stress level is rising and you
feel out of sorts and out of control.
Unless YOU take charge
of your day, it will take charge of you.
Steps to taking charge
of your day:
Value your time – Only do important things (whatever
this means for you at any given moment) with your time.
Delegate all else.
Plan your day wisely – Don’t fall prey to the
temptation to plan for more tasks than you can realistically
handle.
Do one thing at a time – Don’t allow other’s requests
to distract you from your task at hand. Unless it’s a true
emergency, ensure that you complete whatever task is
currently taking your attention.
Train others – Ensure that your co-managers and staff
are aware of your time schedule.
Communicate clearly – Let everyone know when you will
be available for what.
Leave room for the unexpected – Don’t crowd your day
so much that an unexpected occurrence has the power to
throws you completely off track.
Take breaks – A number of short breaks during the day
will ensure that you remain reasonably fresh and focused for
all you need to do.
