END OF YEAR THOUGHTS
It's the last day of 2007 and
what a year it has been!
As I've shared with you in
previous newsletters I tend to
spend the last few days of each
year reviewing the year that has
passed. During this process I
revisit my plans, hopes and
dreams and identify whether I've
achieved - or at least have
moved closer to - the goals I
had set myself. Some years I can
put more ticks next to my goals
than others. Most years I
discover that some of the goals
I had have changed - often quite
significantly - throughout the
year. Some I've simply discarded
along the way.
Even if you are not a goal
setter, I imagine that you are
no stranger to making the odd
New Year’s resolution. After
all, as Google tells me, New
Year’s resolutions are part of a
number of traditions that date
back to the early Babylonians. I
bet you didn’t know that!
So, does this sound familiar?
Next year I'll lose at least 10
kgs!
Next year I'll get that
promotion!
Next year I'll definitely be
more consistent with my
children!
Next year I'll start exercising!
Of course it does! Everybody
falls prey to this type of
thinking every so often! But
does it work? How many of us
actually follow through with
these good intentions?
Experience tells me, not too
many! Some of us make a more
determined effort than others
but most of us run out of steam
before too long.
Why is that?
WISHBONE OR BACKBONE?
I believe that the reason for
this is that we often approach
changes that require effort on
our part with a lot of wishbone
and not enough backbone. Yes, we
all want whatever it is we want
- the svelte body, the money or
kudos that comes with the
promotion, better behaved
children, the fitness and health
that comes with exercise. Of
course we do! But when we
actually remember that there is
a price tag attached to these
intentions, they frequently just
fly out the window.
Nobody wants to do the difficult
stuff!
Yet, when we find ourselves on
the last day of 2008 still 10
kgs - or God forbid even 15 kgs
(by now) - heavier than we want
to be, still stuck in the same
old position we were in last
year, our kids a year older but
running the house with greater
cunningness than ever and our
health deteriorating, how do we
feel?
If that is you, don't you just
want to kick yourself? Don't you
feel angry with yourself? Don't
you feel weak and despairing
that 12 months have passed (yet
again) and nothing has changed?
So, how can this be done
differently?
THE SECRET
Don't beat yourself up. Don't
dwell on the failures of
yesterday and, whatever you do,
don't make any New Year's
resolutions. Today, just enjoy
the fact that it's the last day
of 2007. Then, next year when
you feel ready - and only when
you feel really and truly ready
- decide to make one change.
Yes, you read correctly - just
ONE change. If it’s a big change
you wish to make, ensure that
you divide it into small
sections that are doable and
measurable. For example, if it's
10 kgs you want to shed, decide
on losing 2 kgs next month. Work
out what you need to do to
achieve a 2 kg weigh loss over a
4 week period and be sure that
you have a worthwhile reward
waiting for you at the end of
this time. Then set another
doable weightloss goal for the
next month. If shedding 2 kgs
felt comfy, do it again. If you
feel more confident and
(hopefully) encouraged by your
success, you could even try for
3 kgs. Just don't set your
sights too high. Small and
steady will often get you there
a lot faster than going at it
like a bull at a gate.
Do you see what I mean? Don't
tackle too much at once. It
never works. Decide what’s
important to you and focus on
one thing at a time. Then just
put one foot in front of the
other and start in the direction
of your dream.
Have a wonderful New Year’s Eve
and a fantastic 2008!

FIRST WORKSHOP IN 2008
JUST DO IT IN O8!
Hopes, dreams, goals?
We all have some but often don't
know how to go about achieving
them.
Sometimes we have so many of
them that we get confused or
overwhelmed before we even get
to first base.
Sometimes we start, filled with
great enthusiasm, but run out of
steam long before we achieve any
of them.
Sometimes we get discouraged and
give up after the first setback.
Sometimes we don't dare start at
all.
How would it be if this year was
going to be different?
How would it be if you could
stop just thinking about it and
simply start doing it?
How would it be if you had a
road map and a game plan?
How would it be if you had
someone cheering you on when the
going gets tough?
How would it be?
