THE POWER OF 'ONE'
In order to lead a satisfying life - a life of purpose and significance - we need to discover and develop our PERSONAL POWER. Now, understand that when I refer to personal power I am not speaking of the power that comes from physical strength or from a feeling of superiority. Rather, I am referring to the authentic personal power that comes from within. This is the power that enables us to make life choices, impacts the lives of others and enables us to design our future. This power is an awesome force that can be used in either positive or negative ways. It is also an important and invaluable ingredient that helps pave our path to success. In order to use this power in positive and life-enhancing ways it is essential, however, that we have a high level of self-awareness and healthy self-esteem - two areas at which we will take a closer look in future newsletters.
WHAT EXACTLY IS PERSONAL POWER?
The way I understand the concept of personal power is the unique ability we have as human beings to make choices - good or bad! Whilst we rarely are consciously aware of this, each one of us exercises this amazing ability (power) dozens if not hundreds of times each day and everything we do results from this. Whether we choose to begin our day by walking around the block, enjoying a nourishing breakfast and arriving at work in an unhurried and grounded frame of mind or by jumping out of bed 5 minutes before we are due at our first meeting, forgetting breakfast altogether and arriving at our office frazzled, disorganised and downright chaotic, depends on this power. Whether we act in a friendly or an unfriendly manner, build up or tear down, make our point forcefully or gracefully - it all depends on how we use our power. So, how can we use our personal power to benefit ourselves and others?
BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL POWER
1. Identify the areas in your life in which you could exercise your personal power in more life-enhancing ways. This could be in your health-, career-, relationships-, personal-, professional or spiritual development arena or any other.

2. Having chosen the appropriate area/s you wish to focus on at this point in your life, decide which kids of changes you want to make. For instance, you may wish to shed some of the weight that's been making you feel like a baloon and has been compromising your health; or you might want to quit an unsatisfactory job so that you can pursue a long-cherished dream; or you'd like to change the way you communicate with your loved ones; or......whatever is important to YOU.

3. Remember that personal power equals choice. Step 3 requires that you use the amazing ability you have been given to make the choices that you believe will lead you towards the outcome you are hoping for. As tackling too many things at once usually causes a feeling of overwhelm - "it's all too hard so I'd rather not even try!" - my recommendation would be that you just focus on one choice at a time. The important thing is not the quantity but the quality of your choice. The quality is defined by the level of your commitment to see the desired changes through to their conclusion.

4. Having made the choice, the next important move that needs to be made is taking the first step. Here it is important to remember the words of Martin Luther King Jr. who said: "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step!" Looking at the above examples, this could mean that you start eating differently and that you embark on a regular gym routine; it could mean that you begin to focus on how to go about acquiring that dream job; it could mean that you explore what type of courses may be available to learn better communication skills or you could even hire a coach to help you with this project.....

Once that first step - which is always the most difficult - is made, the second, third and subsequent steps will become easier and easier. This really isn't all that different to the experience you would have when you begin an exercise program. The first few training sessions are enormously painful and hard. Those that follow become easier and easier. Once you see the pudge beginning to diminish or muscles bulging in all the right places and you begin to look fit and healthy, what was once a drudgery now becomes a cherished process because you can see results. Exactly the same is true for building your personal power. Each time you exercise the discipline required to 'stay on track', your sense of personal power grows and grows and once you begin to see the benefits, your life will never be the same.

Happy personal power building!!!!
