The greatest
discovery of any generation is
that human beings can alter
their lives by altering the
attitude of their minds (Albert
Schweitzer)
Attitude
is a choice!
Whilst this
statement may not ring true to you
if you’ve been struggling with
negativity or beliefs about yourself
and the world that have held you in
a state of despair, anxiety or
depression,
its truth has been
proven by many. To give you some
examples let’s take a look at a
couple of famous people:
Nelson Mandela
is –
without a doubt - one of the
greatest heroes of the 20th
century. As a political activist in
one of the most difficult and
complex conflicts of our era, Nelson
Mandela succeeded not only in his
fight against injustice and evil but
also in portraying the awesome power
of attitude. Despite his many
trials, the long and harrowing years
he spent in prison, the indignities
and many injustices he experienced
and fought throughout his long walk
to freedom, he chose – in the words
of R.W. Johnson (The Times) -
“to remain humane, dignified and
magnificently unembittered”.
To name another
famous man – Victor Frankl –
a prominent Viennese Psychiatrist
who happened to have the misfortune
of being a member of the Jewish race
during Hitler’s Regime was, along
with millions of other Jews sent to
a Concentration Camp in which he
lost his entire family. He, like the
other Jewish people of his time, was
stripped of everything he had – his
family, his possessions, his
dignity, his freedom. Many others by
whom he was surrounded in the
Concentration Camp were unable to
deal with the terrible and inhumane
treatment. Grief- stricken by their
horrible fate, weakened by
malnourishment, wracked by sickness
and disease one day they simply laid
down and died. For whatever reason,
Victor Frankl, however, decided that
this was not going to be his fate.
He determined that neither sickness
nor disease, neither torture nor the
grief of his terrible losses would
rob him of what he termed the last
of man’s freedoms - HIS ATTITUDE.
Amazingly he survived to become an
even more prominent Psychiatrist who
spent the remainder of his life
helping countless people overcome
whatever difficulties fate had
thrown at them. Victor Frank coined
the phrase: “Everything can be
taken from a man but ...the last of
the human freedoms - to choose one's
attitude in any given set of
circumstances, to choose one's own
way."
Curious about the
power of attitude, about what
motivates those who take charge of
their lives by taking charge of
their attitude and what makes it
difficult for others to do the same,
I began to study this topic.
Fascinated by my
findings and totally convicted that
each human being holds the power to
change whatever attitude they may
have had in the past, I now run a
mini-seminar on this exciting
subject.

topic, discover its secrets and
